Adaptive Reuse and Renovation

With extensive experience in adaptive reuse, including an award-winning conversion of a 19th century Manhattan carriage house into a single-family residence, daSILVA has given new life to older buildings time and again through renovation and redesign. Although renovation projects are often more complicated than designing a building from scratch, as no one knows exactly how accurate "as-built" drawings are until construction begins, the daSILVA team is expert at working through unforeseen issues, and is thus able to provide a variety of choices in response to any situation presented.

Architecture

daSILVA Architects has a long history of designing some of the most complicated types of buildings (hospitals and other health care facilities). The restrictions, limitations, and demands of complex technology present design problems that we consistently succeed at, and enjoy, solving.

Our team approach, working side-by-side with clients to fully understand their perspective and specific needs, allows us to discover the most creative solutions possible for a wide variety of institutional, residential, commercial, educational, and facilities.

We consider ourselves expert at "in the box" solutions that accommodate any situation.

In the design of new buildings—the ultimate artistic challenge—daSILVA works closely with clients and end-users to assess expectations and aspirations, and then translate what they learn into reality. A variety of graphic tools are used to present the architect's interpretation of those expectations to the client and aid them in decision-making process for the final designs.

Interiors

The interior designers at daSILVA refine design concepts to ensure that materials selected for each project will meet functional requirements and, at the same time, create aesthetically pleasing environments. Working closely with the architecture team, they fine-tune interior finishes and furnishings to enhance the ambiance of clinical spaces and improve the experience of the end user. Our designers strive to create interiors that promote a sense of wellbeing with a sensitivity to the aesthetics and constraints of each space.

Master Planning

In creating a master plan, daSILVA considers such factors as long-range projections of future needs, anticipated funding, and consideration of building life cycles and studies of population demographics. It is a complex, multi-variable process involving a host of considerations that include an assessment of the existing physical plant to determine what infrastructure is already in place and what systems must be created to support the client's goals.

The firm’s strength in master planning is evident in the range of projects we are asked to consult on, including the needs of a single department to campus-wide planning for medical centers and educational institutions.

Specialty Consulting

Joint Ventures

When we believe it is in the client's best interest, daSILVA will partner with specialized firms to complete specific projects. Teaming with these firms have produced excellent results. Currently, we are collaborating with Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architects LLP on two major New York City hospital projects; daSILVA is providing expert medical planning services in support of Pei Cobb Freed's internationally acclaimed expertise in design.

Other projects have included partnerships to develop health care facilities for the New York State Correctional System, a task-order contract with New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation, and another partnership for the award-winning NYC Department of Sanitation Garage in Queens. An additional project of note is the W. M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience at Rutgers University, completed in conjunction with Gertler Wente Kerbeykian Architects LLP, in 2001.
