Yale University
Vanderbilt Hall Revitalization*
New Haven, CT
Vanderbilt Hall, constructed in 1894,
required rehabilitative work after eight
decades of student use and weather. Anton
Martinez, while working at Edward Larrabee
Barnes and Associates, revamped the form
and function of this gothic Yale landmark.
The new installation of attic and basement
windows brightened the first and topmost
floors with natural sunlight enabling
prior unused space to be used as student
dormitory rooms. Intricate oak paneling
and lighting were redesigned in common
spaces and private rooms. Exterior
stonework was restored to its strong,
original beauty. Communal benches were
added to the street-side courtyard,
further connecting the college with the
surrounding city of New Haven.
