Yale University
Durfee Hall Revitalization*
New Haven, CT

Durfee Hall, constructed in 1871 at the heart of Yale’s Old Campus, has long played a central role in campus life. A century after construction, Anton Martinez, while at Edward Larrabee Barnes Associates, was responsible for rehabilitating the decaying stone exterior and adding more beds without constructing a new building or additions to the structures. While maintaining the original integrity of the interior, the structure was technologically updated; new electrical and safety systems were seamlessly installed beneath renovated, detailed oak paneling. New bed rooms were created in the previously unoccupied attic and basement where they captured light through new light wells and skylights. Residential facilities, recreation rooms, seminar rooms, and the restaurant were repaired with restraint and attention to detail.
