The decision to combine the departments of chemistry, hematology and microbiology provided the impetus for a total redesign of the clinical labs at Montefiore Medical Center. daSILVA Architects' flexible redesign accommodated robotics technology and provided for future change and growth. The new lab maximizes functional flow, allows for increased productivity and encourages communication among the staff. As no swing space was available, construction had to happen within the confines of the existing labs and each phase was planned in minute detail to allow for continuing laboratory operations. The new automated lab processes led to increased capacity and reduced costs.
