daSILVA Architects developed a master plan for the restoration of an early 19th century farming complex, which included six structures on 40 acres. The main house and carriage house were reconstructed to preserve the rustic vernacular of the surrounding architecture. Within the carriage house, a modern living and working space was developed. New steel stairs and multiple floor elements were arranged to create a transparent layer of architecture contrasting to a backdrop of exposed heavy wood framing of the original structure. Wood removed from the barn was refinished and used as flooring detail inlaid between new sections of concrete and hardwood finishes. Simple, clean lines of new steel and woodwork were used to parallel existing construction methods.
