Long Island Developmental Center
Melville, NY

Long Island Developmental Center is a residential facility operated by the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. daSILVA Architects planned two sections of group homes on the grounds of the facility. Each group home provides housing for eight to twelve individuals with common living areas, kitchens and program space. The homes, containing 5,000 SF of living space, were specifically designed and located to blend in with the surrounding single-family home neighborhoods. Each home is fully accessible and offers an area for supervised pickup and drop off of clients, who are bussed on a daily basis to programs at the Center. Site planning, utilities, roads and landscaping were designed within the context of the adjacent neighborhoods.
