Weinberg Gardens*
Beth Abraham Hospital, NY

The program for this senior housing complex called for both barrier free and conventional rental apartment units ranging from studio to two bedrooms. The intent was to allow seniors to live on their own for as long as possible, by offering a community and support services not offered in other large private housing projects. The design focuses on combining a sense of community and security within the buildings, without compromising the privacy and independence of each unit. Each unit can accommodate hospital beds, wheelchairs and other equipment that might be needed for barrier free living. A sense of community is engendered with various activity rooms and communal dining and laundry rooms. This project received the 1996 award of distinction from NAHB (The National Association of Home Builders) for Best Affordable Multifamily Project.
