Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
New York, NY
The Urgent Care Center, which serves as a specialized emergency department for cancer patients at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of New York City, was recently renovated and enlarged by daSILVA Architects. The new center, which replaces an existing facility, offers medical assistance to patients experiencing complications 24 hours a day. Designed to provide a therapeutic environment for patients and their families, the warm, comfortable facility aids in reducing stress levels by providing increased patient privacy within a non-clinical atmosphere.
The 7,700 SF unit is comprised of 19 beds, including two isolation rooms, three private rooms, and a procedure room. A treatment lounge with four recliner units provides flexibility for less acute patients or patients receiving transfusions or chemo infusions. Two triage rooms open off a waiting area which accommodates 30 people.
As Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center receives a significant proportion of their inpatient admissions through the UCC, the efficiency of patient flow through the unit was a critical consideration. Two identical triage rooms allow for the quick assessment of patients and help to reduce waiting time. The mix of cubicle spaces, enclosed patient holding rooms and the treatment lounge recliner spaces provide a wide array of options for holding patients based on the acuity of their symptoms and the duration of their stay.
