Northern New Jersey Cancer Associates is a private, free-standing radiation oncology facility affiliated with Hackensack University Medical Center. The center specializes in TomoTherapy, an integrated adaptive radiotherapy system that utilizes an image-guided CT system to deliver 6 MV photon energy radiation. TomoTherapy delivers a very sophisticated form of IGRT and ART, or Image Guided Radiotherapy or Adaptive Radiotherapy, which integrates treatment planning, delivery, and verification in one system.
daSILVA renovated the 9,100 SF a former super market to form the base of this facility. The program includes reception and waiting areas, three exams rooms, a nursing station, private dressing rooms, and treatment rooms. In addition, staff areas include two physician’s offices, a physicist’s office, and a complete dosimetry computer room for radiation planning. There is also a staff lounge, a supply storage area, a clean workroom, a reading room for two film processors, and a soiled hold room for laundry and waste. A major component of the project was the installation of a new, lead-lined vault with a 10-ton sliding door for the TomoTherapy unit. The sensitivity of the machine along with the intense dosage of radiation required tubular steel construction with 4" to 8" thick lead bricks, finishing included drywall ceilings completed in a tongue and groove pattern; no nails were used.
