This new residence in an historic former carriage house incorporates approximately 7,500 SF on 3.5 floors. The project involved multiple construction phases and was completed in ten months.

daSILVA Architects’ main design objective was to create a family-centered house in the city. In many metropolitan townhouses, different elements of the house are separated and there is little intercommunication between floors. In our design, a central sky lit stairwell unifies the spaces and allows for natural light to filter through the core of the house. On the first floor are the main entertaining and public areas, including the dining room and a living room that leads to a small backyard garden. Family bedrooms are located on the second floor and a guest room, playroom, and servant’s quarters round out the top story.

The project involved gutting the existing structure, providing new floor and roof construction, and adding the third story in a manner approved by the Landmarks Commission. In addition, the interior areas were renovated and the entire rear façade redesigned.
