Manhattan Townhouse Renovation

New York, NY

Projects: Previous | Next

A complete interior renovation and façade refacing turned this historic 1890s townhouse into a new luxury apartment building. Inside, six small apartments and studios were renovated into three luxury rentals comprising two two-bedroom units and a one-bedroom floor-through. Each apartment has two full baths (one fully marbled) and custom-designed kitchen cabinetry. The lower duplex has exclusive rights to a backyard garden.

The façade design required the review and approval of the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Window openings were enlarged and the windows replaced with new insulated glass in wood-framed casements. Cast stone trims and panels that echo the character of the neighboring limestone buildings replaced the brick used formerly.

The design maintains two original door openings to lend a sense of balance to the exterior. Polished brass lanterns and an engraved address over one door demarcate the building entrance, while the first floor entrance to what was once a medical clinic is now a fixed panel door. The renovated façade effectively brings what was once a tenement building up to the aesthetic standards set by its Upper East Side neighbors.
