In collaboration with the Department of Pathology, Facilities Management, and Morgan Construction Enterprises, daSILVA Architects identified four major phases of work required for the renovation and reconfiguration of the Pathology Department. This work was required for the functional enhancement of the Department, the accreditation of the Resident Program, the licensing of the Pathology Program, and the increased efficiency and space utilization in the research labs. Decanting of some programmatically independent functions to other buildings on campus made renovations possible.
The total program included 18 workstations/lab benches for assistants; a tissue culture room with four bio-safety cabinets; a dissecting room with two dissecting tables; 24 offices with five administrative assistants cubicles and 17 general work spaces; a fellows area with 26 cubicles; six grossing stations within histology; two microscope rooms, and a renovated women’s lavatory. The master plan pertained to the following users: Histology (Modification of the grossing room to provide six replacement grossing stations, a central grossing table, and additional sample storage space); Fellows (new fellows’ room to accommodate twenty-six cubicles with related support facilities); Pediatric Pathology; Oral Pathology; Cytopathology; Gyn Pathology; and Research.
