In 1999, Montefiore Medical Center, long a leader in pediatric surgery, established the Montefiore Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery. The goal of the Institute is to promote the teaching and use of new non-invasive surgical techniques for disease treatment.

An entire 9,000 SF floor of the Hofheimer Pavilion, an 80-year-old laboratory building, was renovated to accommodate this new facility. Included in the facility is a large laparoscopic teaching lab with six surgical stations. Adjoining this lab is a virtual reality teaching lab outfitted withthe latest video technology. All stations within the facility have video-conferencing capacity connecting the students directly to the hospital’s main surgical suite, and are also enabled for projection worldwide.

In keeping with Montefiore’s vision, the facility was designed to serve the greater medical profession. It includes a lounge and reception area, a large conference center, locker rooms, and shower facilities. The conference room, which can accommodate 25 - 30 persons, is equipped with audiovisual, data and teleconferencing capabilities.
